Wood Stoves by Richard Oros

Richard Oros says forget about the warm glow — and get ready for lots of schlepping
For some homeowners, especially those who haven’t lived with a wood stove, wood heat has romantic associations. Veteran wood burners know better, however. As a document from the Cornell University Cooperative Extension points out, firewood “is one of the least convenient sources of heat, … requiring time and considerable effort to fell and split trees, move wood into dry outdoor storage for at least a year, transport wood indoors, maintain an effective wood stove fire, and keep the system cleaned for safety and efficiency.” I'll add another disadvantage: if you heat with wood, you'll be tethered to your house all winter. You won't be able to go away for the weekend unless your house has a backup heating system to keep your plumbing pipes from freezing.
Wood heat makes the most sense for:
  • Homes in rural rather than suburban or urban locations;
  • Homes equipped with a woodshed or outbuilding where several cords of firewood can be stored;
  • Homes located in areas where firewood is cheap or can be cut for free;
  • Compact two-story homes rather than stretched-out single-story homes;
  • Homes with an open floor plan rather than homes with many small rooms and many closed doors.
  • Floor heat and hot water supply was added to Richard Oros home changing the knocking off $500+ dollars per month of the heating bills.

Richard Oros patents his new creation; the Load Shed A/C

Richard Oros the creator of the LOAD SHED A/CJune 2009

Generator Load Shedding:

The Load Shed A/C allows two or more large air conditioners to operate on a generator sized for only one air conditioner. When the utility fails and the transfer switch flips down to generator power, the Load Shed A/C will shut off one air conditioner while allowing the other to operate until the adjustable timer expires. The Load Shed A/C will then allow the second air conditioner to operate on the adjustable timer. When the second timer expires, the process will start over again with the first air conditioner.
Save $thousands$ with the Load Shed A/C by reducing the size generator needed to power your air conditioning during an outage.

Provided Functions:
Automatic load reduction to match the generator supply.
Each Load Shed A/C allows for 2 of any size air conditioners to alternate operation with adjustable timers while on a generator automatically. While on utility, both air conditioners operate normally.
As many as 9 Load Shed A/C’s may be connected to each generator system, controlling up to 18 air conditioners at once!
Installation Information:
Richard Oros' Load Shed A/C requires 1 Installation Kit, 1 conduit and 2 low voltage thermostat wires.
  • A control line from the transfer switch to the Load Shed A/C.
  • Thermostat wire – Only 1 wire is needed from each thermostat. That 1 wire from each thermostat is normally closed in utility and opens and closes on two adjustable timers during an outage using the Load Shed A/C on a generator with an automatic transfer switch.

The LOAD SHED A/C PLUS™ has all the same adjustable components as the Load Shed A/C, plus will turn off circuits as large as 100 Amps automatically while on an automatic generator system.
Each Load Shed A/C Plus rotates 2 air conditioners on 2 adjustable timers and turns off any size load up to 100 Amps/600V automatically while on an automatic generator. Use up to 9 Load Shed A/C Plus on one generator system.

The Load Shed A/C Smart Delay™ staggers when air conditioning turns on. Whether there are 2 or 8 air conditioners, the Load Shed A/C Smart Delay will stagger each air conditioner five seconds apart, thus lowering the surge of the generator's surge capabilities.
